12 Nov Wild for the Weminuche
Did you know we have access to Colorado’s largest wilderness area right here in our community?! The Weminuche Wilderness spans across our beautiful state and provides 448,210 acres of terrain for us to explore. If you’ve done much outside in the southwestern part of Colorado, it’s likely you’ve stepped into the Weminuche. And here at Durango Outdoor Exchange we are “Wild for Weminuche!” A catchy phase coined by the lovely folks at San Juan Mountains Association who are doing their part to protect public lands and provide stewardship and education.
San Juan Mountains Association or as the locals call it SJMA, has recently established The Weminuche Wilderness Stewardship Fund. Donations to the fund will address the specific challenges the Weminuche faces such as Beetle infestations, overuse issues and staff shortages. The solutions will be creative and effective and include the following (from SJMA website):
- Implement on-the-ground stewardship projects
- Provide trail access
- Coordinate and equip volunteer rangers that will engage in stewardship projects and educate visitors on proper backcountry practices
- Educate the public on Leave No Trace ethics
We truly appreciate the efforts of SJMA and are excited to support the Weminuche Wilderness Stewardship Fund in a unique way with a gear drive! Through the end of the year, you can donate your gear to the SJMA consignment account and 100% of the sale will be donated to the fund. In addition, we’ve decided to match up to $1,00o so each donation of gear goes just a bit further. We hope you’ll swing by soon and donate your gear to this important cause.
